Design Classics: The Egg Chair

It's been a while, I know, but don't worry I haven't forgot about my Design Classics series. And to make it up to you, here's a super long one with lots of eye candy.

The Egg chair – which celebrated his 50th anniversary last year– was designed by Denmark's most renowned architect, slash designer, Arne Jacobsen. After building the Radisson SAS Hotel in Copenhagen, Jacobsen designed the egg chair to become part of the interior.

Half a century later, there's still one room in the hotel, Room 606, that features the original Arne Jacobsen interior. Think of it as the Lourdes for every true design devotee...

The organically shaped chair also ensured privacy in the hotel lobby. I must admit, I tried the chair out myself – unfortunately not in Copenhagen – and it really feels like your sitting in your own little cocoon.

The chair was originally only available in leather. But due to the organic shape, stitching the leather needs to be done by hand. A very time consuming and therefor expensive process. That's why producer Fritz Hanzen decided to do a fabric version which is about half the price of the original leather one. Unfortunately that still means a 3.000€ price tag. Ah, a girl can dream, can't she...

I'm a huge fan of he egg chair! If it wasn't so out of reach price wise, I would definitely buy one for our nursery!!

At present there are only handful of these Egg sofas made. As a result of sofas are quite expensive. The Egg chairs on the other hand still very popular with people. You may even have seen the Egg Chairs being used in various movies. For instance chair had guest appearances in Back to Future II, Men in Black & in the movie Chicken Little. Here the Egg chairs can be considered to have made double appearance.
