Design devision

The perfect hideaway, that's the Nomad screen system by Mio.

Because:
a – it's made out of recycled cardboard so environmentally friendly,
b – it's modular so you can build it to your own whims and desires, and
c – it looks so great that I would just stare at it all day long!

Ikea 2010

My name is Caroline and I am an Ikea addict. My new catalogue has hardly left my hands since I go it, so to make it sound a little less pathetic – I really don't need any new furniture at all – I decided to do a blog post about my current favourite new items.

IKEA PS Karljohan table

IKEA 365+ Table lamp

Engan chest

Dragan jars

Besta Burs desk

What about you, do you have any favorites yet?

PS: Although I'm a big Ikea fan, as a graphic designer I am saddened by their decision to change their corporate font. Read more about it here.

Design Hotel: The Grand Daddy

The Grand Daddy hotel in South Africa has some great rooms and suites but I am more charmed with their roof. I can see some raised highbrows over this, but the top of this hotel is quite exceptional.

It is the home of seven iconic Airstream trailers. Don't think trailer trash but beautiful designed caravans with all luxuries provided and a complementary view of Table Mountain.

Off all the places

While flicking through TV channels this weekend, I came across a drama series on BBC. I can't recall the title – it was about some kidnapping scheme that went wrong – but was immediately transfixed with the set location. It took place in a modern house made up intirely of concrete and glass, no real surprises so far, but it was set next to an old cemetery!

At first I thought the graves might be added by the television makers to add some suspense but after some googling I found out that this building indeed borders a rather eery location. The house, designed by Eldrige Smerin Architects, is located in Swains Lane London on the edge of an historic Victorian cemetery.

Images trough Wallpaper

Although the cemetery has almost a romantic feel during the day, I feel that at night, I would find the crooked tombs a tiny bit too scary...

Let the sun shine

There's no doubt about it, it's hip to be green. And although environmental no longer equals woolen socks in sandals, some green products still lack a bit of a design touch.

Solar panels instantly spring to mind. We all have to do our bit, but I cringe every time I pass a roof covered with solar tiles. Fortunately Danish designer Astrid Krogh has come up with a way to save the world in style. Her SunTiles are curtains woven of solar cell plates. They do not only collect the energy from the sunlight but also store the heat from the sun.

Design hotel: Apartment K

Apartment K in Reykjavic, Iceland, is in fact – as the name gives away – not an hotel but a full serviced apartment.

A perfect solution if you want to add a touch of design to your trip but don't want to pay boutique hotel prices.
