Art therapy

My walls are looking so white at the moment, they are in desperately need of some art.

Art on display

When visiting somebody's home I'm always eager to see what they have hanging on their wall. I think it says as much about somebody's personality as the books on their shelves.

So let me treat you to some great wall display.

I heart...

... this gigantic mural.

I wonder how you keep track of what you're drawing when you work on a format as big as this

There's art in everything

Most artist use pencils and crayons as a tool to make art but there are always exceptions...

Australian illustrator Ghostpatrol uses his pencils as a canvas to draw on.

And Pete Goldlust turns crayons into little magnificent sculptures.

These are so wonderfully delicate...

Etsy Favs: Inaluxe

Recently I was going through my favourite sellers list on Etsy, thinking what great talent this site harbors. And at the same time I thought that it wasn't fair to keep this wonderful list all to myself. That's why, in this new series, I'll introduce you to some of my favourite Etsy sellers.

First up: Inaluxe.

When I first added this seller, it was for her lovely dresses, great was my surprise when her shop was all of a sudden stocked with gorgeous art. A woman of many talents...

Check out her Etsy shop!

Mural on the wall...

If you liked the photo wall murals from my previous post, you're going to love Surface View. They have a huge collection of images varying from art from the national gallery to Marvel comics. And besides bespoke murals you can also get the images printed on canvases and blinds.

I'm a big fan of the 'land of lost content' collection by Wayne Hemingway and Stella Mitchell. They have brought together an overview of British retro and kitsch images. Just my cup of tea...

Wishlist: Etsy art

The one place where you can buy affordable art (prints) is off course Etsy. There are so many great artists on there that it's hard to make a holiday selection, but I did my best!

So without further ado, here's my selection.

Number Numbers by Pearl & Marmelade – $18
Nothing like a bit of letterpress to get my blood running. This limited edition print is so cute that you just can't resist...

Charlie Bird by Matte Stephens – $35
I really should just buy this print as a gift for myself, it's been on my wishlist for way too long.

California by Dutch Door Press – $15
Letterpress and vintage inspired illustrations, it doesn't get any better than this!

Thistle by Yellena – $20
I love the unique intricate pattern on this print.

I have a weakness for bird illustrations. Birds are such a thankful subject because of their natural beauty.

But sometimes the amount of bird illustrations out there can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily some just pop out above the rest.

Like the Sushibird tiles by The Red Thread.

I love the contrast between the robustness of the wood and the delicacy of the hand painted illustrations. There's no need to frame them, these are just lovely like they are.

Séraphine

Yesterday I went to the Filmfestival here in Gent to watch "Séraphine".
The movie is based on the true story of Séraphine Louis. She lived in the beginning of the 20th century in Sélis, France. She worked as a servant and laundry maid, but her true passion was painting. Séraphine had no training what so ever but started painting after her guardian angel instructs her to. Her work got discovered when art collector Wilhelm Uhde employs her as a housecleaner. Unfortunately, without telling too much about the movie, things don’t end well for her.

I had never heard of Séraphine Louis before and I was quite impressed with the work shown in the movie. The topic of her paintings is always nature but there is so much emotion and energy in it, it’s almost as if the leaves and flowers are going to jump of the paintings.

Her colours are also incredible. She actually made her own paint out of mud, blood, wax and everything else she could get her hands on.

If you have a chance to see the movie, definitely do. And if you happen to be in Paris soon, there’s an exhibition of her work in the Muséee Maillol until the beginning of january 2009. Might nip over myself…

Etsy art

A while back I was looking at posters to hang in our new dream home, which we hopefully will find soon. Read all about it here.

But after seeing the next pictures, I wondered if it wouldn’t be nicer to have a lot of different prints together, instead of just one big poster.

So I headed down to Etsy and already made a start on my ‘art’ collection.

Poster Mania

Let me get one thing right: I love my apartment. But I must admit that there are a few things that frustrate me. One of these is the fact that we almost have no straight walls! Our apartment is in the attic of a former town house, so most off our walls are slanted. And so, much to my frustration, I can't put anything up on the walls.

But since we're now looking to buy a house, a slow and frustrating search I might add, I have new hope! Impatient as I am, I already started to look at some art prints/ posters on the web.

Here are my favourites so far:

But is it art?

This season, art is no longer just hanging in museums but on your clothes hangers too.

The art movement to be wearing this winter, seems to be pop art.

The best example being the Andy Warhol Collection for Pepe Jeans.

Although Warhol himself is no longer with us, I think he would definitely approve this conversion of his work to fashion. His work is all about using different media, mass production and breaking the rules of art.

But Warhol is not the only inspiration, when flicking through Glamour I saw a dress by Iceberg featuring comic book graphics. A clear tribute to Roy Lichtenstein's work.

I love how something as common as a comic book, can first became art, and that that art now becomes fashion. I love the whole evolution of media.

I heart Matte

I've been a huge fan of Matte Stephens illustrations prints ever since I first set eyes on his Etsy shop.

Being a vintage freak myself, I absolutely love the retro vibe he has in his work.

But apparently not only in his work! After looking around on his blog I found some pictures of his house. The interior is really lovely, it's as inspirational as his work!
